Asclepias curassavica

Tropical milkweed has clusters of bright orange and yellow flowers and a long bloom season. In addition to feeding Monarch & Queen caterpillars, tropical milkweed is an excellent nectar source for butterflies & hummingbirds. Full sun, 2-4’ height, annual.

Oklahoma has many native varieties of perennial milkweeds and we encourage you to plant as many as you can, along with annual milkweeds to provide continuous nectar and habitat. While I prefer planting native milkweeds, tropical milkweed gives a fast-growing food supply of milkweed for those who are raising monarch caterpillars, and it can help fill the gap while waiting for native perennial milkweeds to get established. As long as tropical milkweed is planted outside, it will winter kill in Oklahoma, and not transmit OE to monarch caterpillars.
