Verbesina virginica

This notable perennial gets its name from the “frost flowers” it produces after the first fall freeze when the stems split and exude water that freezes into unusual ice crystals.

Frostweed blooms in autumn, providing valuable nectar to bees and butterflies. Can grow up to 3’ to 6’ or taller with clusters of white flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators.

Grows in full to partial shade; a good choice for planting under trees. Spreads by seed and rhizomes and can form sizable colonies. Medium to dry soil, drought tolerant. Native to most of eastern and central Oklahoma.
