Fall Cover Crop Seed Mix

Early to mid fall is the perfect time to plant cover crops to improve the health of your soil. Cover crops are a simple, inexpensive and highly effective way to improve the quality of your soil. Cover crops increase soil fertility and tilth, prevent soil erosion, suppress weeds and attract pollinating insects.

Austrian winter peas and clover are legumes that provide nitrogen fixation. Winter rye has extensive root development that improves soil structure and increases organic matter. Daikon radishes put down long taproots that help break up heavy, red clay soil. Mustards can be used for weed suppression and pest control. And almost all cover crops produce large quantities of biomass.

Broadcast seed in September or October on prepared soil. Lightly cover or rake in, and water well. Seed will germinate and grow in the fall, and continue to grow more slowly thru the winter. In the spring, before planting vegetable crops, the cover crops can be turned into the soil, or removed and composted or used as mulch.

Give back to your soil, and your soil will give back to you!

Small packet for $2, covers 100 sq. ft
Large packet for $5, covers 500 sq. ft.

5 Seed Mix includes winter rye, Austrian winter peas, crimson clover, daikon radish, mustard greens.
3 Seed Mix includes winter rye, Austrian winter peas, crimson clover.

3 Seed Mix or 5 Seed Mix??

In my garden, I use the 3 seed mix. The 5 seed mix includes daikon radishes and mustards, both of which are in the brassica family. I plant many vegetables that are in the brassica family (kale, arugula, turnips, broccoli, etc.), and I aim for a four year rotation between plant families, so I skip using them in my cover crops.
