Tripsacum dactyloides
Warm-season perennial bunchgrass. Will form tall, dense thickets and can be used as a buffer screen. High in protein and sometimes called “ice cream grass” because livestock find it irresistable. Ancestor to modern corn. Roots can reach 20’ in depth; recommended for erosion control along steep banks. The 10” floral spikes arch above the foliage in summer, and its leaves turn red-bronze in fall. Full sun to part shade, moist to medium soil, usually 4-8’ tall but can grow up to 12’ in height.
