Sorghastrum nutans
One of the most beautiful of the native grasses, Indian grass was a primary grass of the tallgrass prairies in North America. This drought tolerant perennial is the state grass of Oklahoma, found in all 77 of our counties. Growing 3-5′ tall with feathery seed plumes, it turns orange-yellow in the fall and provides color and form in the winter landscape, and provides seed and cover to wildlife. Cut back to the ground in late winter to early spring, before new growth appears. Full sun.
