Prunus americana
A valuable tree for wildlife habitat. The pollen, nectar, leaves and fruit support many native insects, which in turn are critical food for native birds. A plum thicket provides valuable cover for birds and other wildlife. American plums are not long-lived, but send up multiple suckers to form new trees. Fruits are small and tart with tough skins but sweet and juicy flesh, suitable for jams and jellies. Grows 10-20’ tall, full sun to partial shade, med-wet to med-dry soil, white blossoms in spring.
