Walking Onions

A perennial onion, very easy to grow. I like having a patch of walking onions, as it means that I can always run out to the garden and nab some green onions. They don’t form full-sized onions, but instead will grow into large-ish green onions that replenish themselves season after season. Bulbets form on the top of the stalks; when the stalks bend over, the bulbets plant themselves in the ground and sprout new plants. Thus, the onions “walk” themselves throughout the garden. As the stems form bulbets in the spring, they often twist in delightfully odd formations. Give them a year or so to get established, and they will be self-sustaining after that.
