Viola

A sweet little perennial, native to most of central and eastern US. Blooms in early spring, providing much-needed nectar for pollinators when few other plants are flowering, and is a host plant for several Fritillary butterfly species. Self-seeds freely, is adapted to a wide range of habitats. Makes a lovely groundcover, and the flowers and leaves are edible. Full sun to shade, medium-wet to dry soil.
