We offer two native perennial sunflowers, Maximilian Sunflower and Swamp Sunflower, and a couple annual sunflowers.

Maximilian Sunflower

Helianthus maximiliani

A native prairie perennial, Maximilian Sunflowers bloom in late summer and fall, with masses of bright yellow flowers that hug the stalks. At 4’ to 8’ in height, the plants tower above other vegetation when in full bloom; a real stand-out in the landscape. Maximilian Sunflower is a nectar plant for bees and butterflies, and produces a heavy crop of seeds, making it valuable for birds and other wildlife. Full sun, dry to medium soil, tolerant of a range of soil conditions. This plant is rhizomatous and can form large colonies over time, so it may not be a good choice for a small landscape.

Swamp Sunflower

Helianthus angustifolius

Late blooming perennial sunflower with attractive, dark green foliage and bright yellow blooms in fall. Native to southeast Oklahoma. Doesn’t spread aggressively, but rather forms a gradually growing clump. Attracts butterflies and caterpillars, thereby serving as a food source for many species of birds. Wet to medium soil, full sun, grows up to 8’ in height.
