Phlox pilosa
Clusters of pink to lavender flowers are a showy sight each spring, making Prairie Phlox an excellent addition to the home landscape, and a frequent destination for butterflies and hummingbirds. The flat, broad petals provide a perfect landing pad for butterflies and the deep, narrow tube in the center of each flower is well-suited for butterflies and long-tongued pollinators.
Excellent for dry, sunny locations. Spreads by rhizomes to form clumps. Mulching it in summer will help keep the root zone cool. Also known as Downy Phlox for the soft white hairs sometimes found on the stems and leaves. Its five-petaled flowers make it easy to distinguish Prairie Phlox from the non-native, four-petaled Dame’s Rocket.
Prairie Phlox is resistant to powdery mildew, tolerates deer, drought and clay soil. Grows 1-2’ tall, medium-wet to dry soil, full sun.
