A valuable but often overlooked addition to pollinator habitats, sedges are hardy, versatile perennials that provide food, shelter and support for pollinators, birds and other wildlife. There is a sedge for almost any setting!
Plains Oval Sedge has a short, mounded shape which makes it ideal for filling the gaps between taller, more showy flowers. The prickly oval flower spikes turn an attractive golden brown in fall. Like most sedges, its active growth period is in spring and fall when soil temperatures are cooler. Drought tolerant, it also adapts to wetlands or occasional flooding. Grows 1’ tall, blooms early-mid summer. Full sun to partial shade. Space 6-12” apart. Also known as Shortbeak Sedge.
