Centaurea americana
I grew this native annual last year for the first time and it quickly became my new BFF. I fall planted some seedlings, which overwintered and grew into huge, bushy plants with tons of gorgeous flowers in June – quite the showstopper! Can also be spring planted for blooms later in the summer, although the plants won’t get as big. The large blossoms were a huge hit with all sorts of native bees & butterflies, and the seeds are valuable for birds.
The blooms have a sweet fragrance and make lovely cut flowers. It’s in the same genus as Bachelor Buttons, but with larger flowers and is native to most of Oklahoma. Look on the underside of the flowers and you’ll see where it got its name. Grows 2 to 5’ tall, often self-seeds, full sun, dry to medium soil.
