(Baptisia australis)

AKA False Blue Indigo. Baptisia is a good example of the adage about perennials; the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap. Be patient! Initially, Baptisia puts its energy into developing a strong root system; you will see vigorous growth in the above-ground portion later. It’s worth the wait! Blue Wild Indigo has tall stems covered in intense blue-purple blossoms in early summer; a real beauty! As the plants mature, the branching foliage and blossoms become showier and more profuse. This long-lived perennial attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Full sun, medium to dry soil. Will grow well with poor to average soil fertility. Drought & heat tolerant once established, prefers well drained soil.

Mature plants can reach 3-4’ wide and 2-4’ tall.
