Lathyrus odoratus

Sweet peas are a fragrant, old-fashioned flower that produces masses of exquisite blooms in late spring. A favorite cut flower, the blossoms range from pale pinks and whites to deep purples and reds. Be sure and give this vine a trellis or fence to climb on, and a loose, fertile soil (add lots of compost!)

Sweet peas don’t like hot weather; if planted in the spring, they’ll have a very short bloom period before it gets too hot and they die off. By fall planting the seedlings, you ensure an early and bountiful crop!

To overwinter, plant in a sunny location; water and mulch well. Remember to water during periods of winter drought. While the blossoms are not cold-hardy, the seedlings will take freezing weather quite well, and they’ll bloom after the weather warms up. Placing a lightweight row cover over the seedlings during the coldest months will increase their winter hardiness.
