Silphium laciniatum

A prairie icon, Compass plants are tall, long-lived perennials that once covered thousands of acres in Oklahoma and the Midwest. The large leaves tend to orient on a north-south axis so as to minimize intense overhead sun exposure, giving rise to its common name. This sturdy plant can grow up to 8’ tall, with sunflower-like flowers on the upper part of the stems. Attracts butterflies and birds. Medium to dry soil, full to partial sun, summer blooming.
