Broccoli Raab (or rabe) is in the brassica family, but it boasts a distinctive and deliciously bitter flavor. All of the plant is good eating; leaves, stems and buds. Broccoli raab prefers cooler temps, so it’s best to plant and harvest in spring or fall. Harvest plants before the buds open for the sweetest flavor; you can harvest the whole plant, or cut individual leaves and buds/stems and it will send out new leaves. Plant 6” apart. Several seedlings are in each biodegradable pot.
A classic vegetable in Italian cuisine, raab is delicious sauteed, with pasta or polenta, or added to soups. Its peppery flavor makes it the perfect counterpoint to rich, creamy recipes.
