Amaranthus spp.

Amaranths are tall, well-branched plants that make a striking presence in the landscape and produce armloads of blooms. Plant in the back of garden beds, or use as a central showpiece. Heat loving and easy to grow in Oklahoma summers, as long as they get full sun and well-drained soil. Will thrive even with poor soil fertility, and the seeds are enjoyed by birds. Amaranths are annuals in our climate, but will often re-seed abundantly.

Large, textural plumes make a colorful addition to bouquets. Pinch out the center bud when the plant is young to increase branching. Flowers can also be dried. Open pollinated. Space 12-24” apart.
